American Indians

In the early days, the Indians lived in four main parts of North America. Each of these parts had a different kind of land.

There were many tribes of Indians living in our country.  A tribe is a group of people living together like a large family.  The Indians all had black hair and red-brown skins.  But they lived differently in different parts of our country.  They dressed differently and ate differently.

The Plains Indians moved about so they built tents (tepees) for their homes.

The Indians who lived along the northwest seacoast built large homes of wood.

The Indians of the Southwest built their homes of sun-dried brick called pueblos.

The Woodland Indians built homes of tree branches covered with bark, called longhouses.
