Ancient China
The Chinese people have one of the oldest civilizations in the world. They date back as far as 12,000 years ago when Stone Age people lived in China. Farmers grew wheat along the Yellow River about 5,000 years ago, and the Shang, had its first dynasty about 4,000 years ago.
The Great Wall
The Great Wall was built by hand out of granite, stone, brick and earth during the reign of Emperor Ch'in Shih Huang Ti, between 250-210 B.C. He had the wall built to protect his empire's border against the Mongol horsemen who came down from the north, raiding villages and towns. The Great Wall stands up to 35 feet tall and is approximately 4,600 miles long. It is the longest structure ever built.
